Minister of Higher Education: ‘Our priority is to strengthen relations between the region’s universities and worldwide universities’.

Strengthening and connecting Kurdistan region universities with developed world-class universities was emphasised recently in a
Ministry of Higher Education Council meeting.

Minister for Higher Education and Scientific Research Professor Dlawar Abdul Aziz Ala'Aldeen announced that a large conference will be held next October in Erbil to bridge relations between the universities of the Kurdistan Region and the developed world. The minister said that the aim of the conference “is to create a suitable environment for the Phd system and to connect Kurdish academics with world science while regaining academic status to the region’s universities”.

Speaking about the work of the committee of quality assurance process, the minister said: “The core of the Ministry’s thought is to raise the standards of quality assurance. Therefore we have to pursue it further in order to implement it at the universities and colleges.”

A new system for Master’s degrees for this year was also discussed along with the drafting of a new bill for private education. The Ministry suggests setting up a committee of legal experts to prepare the proposed bill. This committee will also prepare a report on how best to raise standards of private universities, which will be submitted to the Kurdistan Regional Government.
