Education Duration in Law Departments will be changed to Five Academic Years

Aiming at studying the reality of law education in the Kurdistan Region, and making steps towards making follow ups and reformation in Law departments in the Kurdistan Region Universities, Dr. Yusuf Goran, the KRG Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, headed a broad meeting in the ministry’s divan in Erbil.
 
In the meeting, which was held on Thursday September 22, 2015, with the attendance of Director General of Administration and Finance at the KRG Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and Deans of Law Colleges at Kurdistan Region Universities, several decisions on education in the colleges of law were made, and these decisions will be put into implementation in the current academic year of (2015-2016).
 
In this regard, Abas Akram, Spokesman of the KRG Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, said: “ Aiming at making revisions on curriculum of law education in the Kurdistan Region according to the new developments of the Kurdistan Region, at early July with the supervision of Dr. Yusuf Goran a broad meeting was held, where Deans and Department Heads of Law Colleges at Kurdistan Region Public and Private Universities, representatives of the KRG Ministry of Justice, representatives of the Union of Jurists, and representatives of the Lawyers Syndicate attended. In that meeting, after detailed discussion, it has been decided that three committees in Erbil, Dohuk, and Sulaimani tasked with making revisions on curriculum of the law departments to be formed.”
 
“Recently, these committees made several meetings and addressed their reports and recommendations to the ministry. In today’s meeting, after an academic analysis and in the shadow of the above mentioned reports and recommendations, several decisions and changes has been approved,” he added.
 
“One of the key decisions is that the education duration in the law departments from four academic years will be changed to five years, and this  decision will be put into implementation in the current academic year of (2015-2016). Another new decision is that the passing score in the departments of law will be changed into (%60). The education system at law departments at the region’s private and public universities will change into academic years, and some tests will became central, especially in the subjects of English and Arabic languages of the first classes,” he clarified as well.
 
Recently, after discussion and consultation with law colleges in the universities of Salahadin, Sulaimani, Duhok, Baghdad, and Koya on curriculum of law departments, the EU organization has showed their support and cooperation for revising the curriculums and developing them according to the progresses of the modern age.
