Citizenship

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) does not grant citizenship.  The federal government of the Republic of Iraq’s General Directorate for Nationality has exclusive authority in regard to the issue of Iraqi citizenship.

According to the Iraqi Constitution, anyone born in Iraq, born to an Iraqi father and/or born to an Iraqi mother is considered an Iraqi citizen and can apply for citizenship. Additionally, it is possible to obtain Iraqi citizenship through marriage.
